Chupacabra
I’ve never really liked my name, Charlene. I’ve come to the conclusion that it is because I don’t like the “Ch” sound, and because people here always pronounce it wrong.
As much as I’ve always disliked my name, one time during my childhood I was obsessed with writing it everywhere I could. Like on walls. I shouldn’t have been writing on walls, or anywhere else that was not paper for that matter. So my parents got all mad at me for writing on the walls, the windows, the doors, the appliances, etc.
Still, I wanted to write my name everywhere. So I figured that I could still write on walls if it was really small and my parents couldn’t see it. So I went ahead and wrote a “C” (the first letter of my name) everywhere I could think of. I was so excited.
Shortly after running out of places to leave my mark, a horrible thought came to my mind? What if the Chupacabra thought it was “C” for chupacabra and thought I was calling it, then came to kill me? That was almost a reasonable thought, since I was so young and the chupacabra sensation was all you could hear in the news back then. The Chupacabra sucked the blood out of X and Y animal. I was so fricking scared.
So I went back to all my marks and wrote an “h” after the C, so it read “Ch”. That’s so it was obvious that it meant my name, not some monster’s name. After adding an “h” to all the C’s, I felt relieved. Until of course, I remembered that “Chupacabra” also starts with “Ch”. Oh my god. I was terrified. I could hear the Chupacabra creeping behind me already.
I went back and added an “a” after the “Ch”, so it read “Cha”. That would make the monster know that I wasn’t calling it.
That night, shortly before going to sleep I was still scared of the monster. What if the monster was stupid and thought that it said “Chu”? Before going to sleep, I tried to scrub off all the marks I had made. Some came off, and some didn’t. I was terrified for days.
I never wrote on a wall again, that’s for sure.
Have you had any similar experience with monsters (or thought of monsters) in your childhood? Did you parents tell you that the boogeyman would come to get you if you didn’t behave?

:) My parents never told me scary stories and neither did … well, anybody. But when I was in high school I saw my first scary movie and I was so terrified I didn’t sleep for days. Now I’m afraid of the dark, and I’m 20. Curses to my evil friend who forced me to watch scary movies, and curses to my stupid overactive imagination!
Haha that’s so sweet! :D If only all kids were this ready to terrify themselves…
I always wanted to tape posters to my walls, but mom wouldn’t let me. I had to make due with my small door. LOL
Reading that made me laugh. It’s so quintessentially little kid-like. I can imagine that being made into a children’s book. In fact, with your permission, I might even try it. :)
God, that animal is creepy!
It’s like a dog lizard-king!
I would’ve been so scared of that thing when I was little.
Wait, how do you pronounce Charlene? Cause here in Australia, we turn that “Ch” into a “Sh”, so it’s more like “Shar-LEEN”.
Hehe. Cuteness! ^^
I don’t have anything either. I was a pretty…. innocent and naive child? Heh… way up ti ll I was eighteen, when I actually went out. Heh..
Cute story~ :)
Lol that’s funny! :P
I wasn’t scared of monsters as a kid, but I was afraid of ghosts! :O
Aww, that is adorable! That was a nice, funny little story. :)
Bogeyman is typical from my parents. They are always scaring me!
But that’s so cute of you. :)
That’s one of the cutest stories ever. :) My parents never tried to scare me with monsters and I never really thought of them, so I don’t have any interesting stories…
lol. I was never scared of monsters. I don’t think anything ever scared me as a child.
I am scared of big roaches now though. The ones that are the size of socks.
Well… my mom didn’t believe in terrifying children with the Boogeyman… but my grandma did! Heh =P I wasn’t really scared of monsters, though.
But there was this one singing Santa Claus toy my aunt gave me that scared the shit out of me. Especially when it started singing: “You better watch out, you better watch out… Santa Claus is coming to town.” Gave me the creeps!!!
Oh, and I also remember having in my room a huge framed Snow White poster which gave me nightmares! It was terrible, especially since I hated Snow White to begin with. Silly mother never got my princesses right :P
Oh the lengths you went to! Thanks for sharing that - it made me smile :)
I had a sweater that freaked me out at night when I was little. It was fine in the day time, but at night it looked like a blob monster. I hated that thing.
I must admit, I had no idea what a chupacabra was until I just looked it up on Wikipedia. I’ve never heard of that before! I don’t ever remember being afraid of monsters when I was younger, and my parents certainly never threatend me with the boogeyman. I was a good kid! I didn’t need threats. :D Ha ha! What a cute story about yourself though. :) If I had known what a chupacabra was back then, I think I would have been scared of that thing too!
When I was younger I used to read stories about the chupacabra all the time, so when I went to Puerto Rico to visit family I was convinced I would be attacked. It didn’t help that there were bats in the attic making tons of noise while we slept.
